Well Water Testing – Your Questions Answered
Why Test Your Water?
If you rely on a private water supply—such as a well, lake, or rainwater tank—your water isn’t routinely tested unless you take the initiative. Biological contaminants often can't be seen, smelled, or tasted, so regular testing is key to keeping your water safe and your family healthy.
Even when issues are visible—like red stains from iron—testing helps quantify the problem and determine the right treatment solution.
When Should You Test Your Water?
Public health agencies recommend testing private wells for total coliform bacteria at least once a year, ideally during warmer months when contamination risk is highest.
Also test if:
-
Your water’s taste, color, or odor changes
-
Someone in your household has a weakened immune system
-
Your family is growing
-
Anyone experiences unexplained gastrointestinal illness
-
You've recently moved into a new home
What Are the Risks?
Water quality changes over time. Common contamination sources include:
-
Heavy rain or flooding
-
Leaking septic systems
-
Snowmelt
-
Land use changes (farming, construction, etc.)
What Is the Test For?
We test for total coliform bacteria, including fecal coliforms and E. coli, which are indicators of potential contamination from environmental or animal waste sources.
How Does the Test Work?
We use a presence/absence test:
-
A sample is collected and incubated for 48 hours.
-
If coliforms are present, the water turns yellow.
-
If not, the water remains purple.
While this doesn’t provide a numeric result, it’s an industry-standard method to determine if further action is needed.
Is the Test Accurate?
Yes. This test can detect as little as 1 colony-forming unit (CFU) per 100 mL, matching the sensitivity of advanced lab-based testing.
What If the Test is Positive?
If your water tests positive, don’t panic. You have options, including:
-
System repairs
-
Chlorine injection
We’ll guide you in choosing the best solution for your needs and budget.

What If the Test is Negative?
No action is needed, but keep up regular testing—especially annually in the warmer months. You may also consider a proactive approach with a continuous disinfection system, such as a whole-home UV light.
